What Is a Short-Story Cycle, Why Write One, and How? Presented by Laura Bonazzoli
Event Location: Rockport Room
Contact: Julia Pierce   207-236-3642
jpierce@rockportmaine.gov

Recently, Morgan Talty, author of Night of the Living Rez, gave a shout-out to short-story cycles on Maine Public Radio's Maine Calling, noting that they're an increasingly popular genre of fiction. But why? What exactly is a short story cycle? What are its characteristics, and what advantages does it offer over a traditional short-story collection or novel? And if you're intrigued by the possibility of writing one, how might you begin?

Join Rockport author Laura Bonazzoli to explore these and other questions you might have about this fascinating genre. Laura will also read excerpts from her own short-story cycle, Consecration Pond, which was described by Publishers Weekly as “a solid, meditative collection of interconnected short stories that weave together seemingly disparate narratives into a satisfying and cohesive whole.” Consecration Pond was published by indie press Toad Hall Editions in August of 2022, and is available at local bookstores and directly from the publisher at toadhalleditions.ink. Books will also be available at the event.

BIO:

Laura Bonazzoli’s fiction has appeared in Evening Street Review, Exposition Review, The Sandy River Review, and many other publications. She has also published poetry and personal essays in more than thirty literary magazines and several anthologies. After her stories "Prayer of the Bell" and "Spring Ice" were published in literary magazines, she began working on a collection of linked stories that all take place on a pond in Maine. That collection became the short-story cycle, Consecration Pond.

Camden Conference Community Event: International Climate Policy and Trade: Cooperation and Competition
Event Location: Rockport Room
Contact: Julia Pierce   207-236-3642
jpierce@rockportmaine.gov
Camden Conference Community Events at the Rockport Public Library continue in January with a presentation by Peter Dugas focusing on climate legislation.

The industrialized west is more motivated than ever to rapidly decarbonize their economies to stabilize the climate and protect their national security. Meanwhile, after years of deference, the US legislature has passed significant climate legislation. Learn how the pending Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanisms from the EU and UK will provide both a carrot and stick to move the US to adopt even stronger climate policies which can harvest latent advantages for US business foreign relations. Learn also how we Mainers live in the most influential state in the most influential country on global climate policy.

Peter Dugas is the Maine State Coordinator for Citizens Climate Lobby, a nonpartisan grassroots organization focused on effective and equitable climate solutions. He serves as the liaison to the office of Senator Angus King (ME-I) and is an EN-ROADS Climate Ambassador. Peter has been an active advocate for robust climate policy since earning a degree in Physics and Engineering from Brown University and lives and works in Portland, Maine.
