Let's Feel Better Series: Exploring Sound Therapy
Event Location: Rockport Room
Contact: Julia Pierce   207-236-3642
jpierce@rockportmaine.gov

The Rockport Public Library announces a new series of informational programs to introduce the community to traditional and non-traditional wellness modalities offered by doctors and other therapy practitioners in the midcoast. The series is called “Let’s Feel Better” and kicks off on Wednesday, February 1, at 12:00 p.m. with a presentation by Jim Doble entitled, “Exploring Sound Therapy.”

Doble’s program will include a discussion about sound therapy as well as a demonstration of how he uses gongs, chimes, singing bowls and tuning forks in his practice. Doble says, “The complexity of resonant sounds created by these instruments leads one into deep relaxation, while simultaneously stimulating new kinds of neural activity. This creates a great sonic ‘soup' for transformation and healing.”

Jim Doble has been exploring sound professionally and making unique musical instruments for over thirty-five years. Through studies at the Sound Healers Colloquium and other gatherings, Doble has worked with many of the modern pioneers of sound “healing.” Doble is the founder of Elemental Design Sound Therapy and is well-known in the midcoast for his public indoor and outdoor “sound baths” and “sound immersions.” Doble also offers private and small group sound therapy sessions from his home in Union. Learn more by visiting: https://www.elementaldesign.me/

Programs in this new series are free, open to the public, and do not require pre-registration. Upcoming talks will explore reiki, Bowen Therapy, acupressure, and environmental toxins. Stay tuned for more information about the series coming soon.

Author Event with Scott Dickerson for "Telling Stone"
Event Location: Rockport Room
Contact: Julia Pierce   207-236-3642
jpierce@rockportmaine.gov
The Rockport Public Library welcomes author Scott Dickerson for a presentation of his new novel, Telling StoneRichly imagined, founded on archaeological discoveries and Ice Age ecology, Telling Stone is about the origins of art and the lives of these earliest artists.

Who were these Paleolithic hunter-gatherers? How did they live? What did they believe? Why did they create art on cave walls 23,500 years ago?

Dickerson's story follows
Okyo, a young man who "tells stone" by carving with flint tools and painting with powdered rock to honor animals that sustain or threaten the band, and to confront the power of darkness deep in their cave. As unconventional as his art, he is constrained by his band’s strict traditions. Accused to be a man apart, he leaves to wander remote terrain, painting and carving on stone walls where he shelters, but he never abandons his hope to live and create with his own band.

His hope to find a hearthmate is conflicted by another tradition: If he finds her, he must live with her band. Will his art be embraced by them?

Scott Dickerson is a conservation biologist, hunter and gatherer, artist, and designer and maker of fine furniture. He lives on a small farm in coastal Maine where he herds muskmelons and celebrates sweet corn. His first book, To Save a River (Aperture, 2002), tells the story of endangered Atlantic salmon in a Maine river. Telling Stone is his first novel.

Telling Stone is published by Maine Authors Publishing & Collaborative. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event. Copies of the book may also be purchased online at:

jpierce@rockportmaine.gov

The Rockport Conservation Commission announces a 2023 speaker series, entitled, “Taking Action on Climate Change: What Can Rockport Do?” The talks will be held at the Rockport Public Library on the third Wednesday of each month from February 15th to June 21st from 6:00 - 7:15 PM. Refreshments will be provided.

The series is part of the Climate Action Grant awarded by the Maine Governor's Office on Policy, Innovation and the Future (GOPIF) to the Rockport Conservation Commission to fund a climate vulnerability assessment, a greenhouse gas inventory and a public outreach campaign.

Taking Action on Climate Change: What Can Rockport Do? The series is part of the project’s community engagement goals, which aim to educate residents on local climate change topics and resilience strategies. This series will feature local experts discussing how to promote resilience within our community. Speakers will be discussing adaptation strategies such as using  native plants to mitigate impacts, energy efficiency improvements for local residents and businesses, and the role of soil practices in climate resilience. These experts will illustrate how individuals and communities can take action towards mitigation and adaptation to climate change.

Speakers include:

February 15th: Soil Health: A Key to Climate and Community Resiliency - Aaron Englander, Program Manager, Maine Coast Heritage Trust

March 15th: Building Climate Resilience with Native Plant Species - Rebecca Jacobs, Program Manager, Knox-Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District

April 19th: Efficiency Maine Residential Offerings - Lily McVetty, Program Manager, Efficiency Maine

May 17th: Electrification of the Working Waterfront - Emma Wendt, Community Development Officer, Island Institute

June 21st: Plastics, Climate and the Circular Economy, Matt Prindiville, CEO, Upstream

The first talk of the series will feature Aaron Englander, who has been working in Rockport for Maine Coast Heritage Trust as the Erickson Fields Farm and Program Manager since 2014. He will discuss how supporting land conservation, local food systems and regenerative agriculture can help build climate resilience. Englander will share soil building techniques utilized at Maine

Coast Heritage Trusts’ community farm preserves, Erickson Fields and Aldermere Farm, where they offer community agriculture programs.

The Rockport Conservation Commission believes that empowering community members with sound information will help create meaningful and sustainable responses to global climate change and ensure that future generations of Rockporters can thrive.

Short Film Club Screening: By the Waters of the Winds
Event Location: Rockport Room
Contact: Julia Pierce   207-236-3642
jpierce@rockportmaine.gov

On Wednesday, February 22, at 6:00 p.m., the Rockport Public Library will screen the film “By the Waters of the Winds." The 36-minute film documents a 50-mile hike by a group of Mainers in August 2019 visiting the Wind River Range of Wyoming. The film will be followed by a conversation with the filmmakers, Maureen Egan and Tim Seymour of Rockport.

The film takes viewers from sweeping mountain vistas to intimate close-ups with alpine flora. Maureen Egan’s candid narration captures the wonderment of being in such a place, as well as the discomforts and obstacles that can accompany wilderness adventures. The filmmakers’ son, Cole Seymour, wrote the musical score for the film, which beautifully ushers the film’s emotional arch.

Maureen Egan is a 40-year resident of midcoast Maine. She formerly illustrated a column for Downeast Magazine, served as the Enrollment Director for Ashwood Waldorf school, and published the book “The Light From Here” in 2016, documenting her breast cancer experience. After raising her children, she returned to painting and has since shown her work nearly every year across the state.

Tim Seymour, a graduate of the National Outdoor Leadership School, is a trained photographer and graphic designer. Seymour took up filmmaking in 2015 to document his 240-mile hike on the John Muir trail in California that year.

(Maureen Egan also has a display of art in the Rockport Library during the month of February. Some of the paintings were inspired by her trip to the Wind River Range.)
