|Title:||"The World in Your Library: China's One Child Policy" with Professor Hong Zhang|
|Location:||Rockport Opera House|
|Description:||Colby College professor Hong Zhang will present a talk on China's one-child policy and how it has changed over time on Wednesday, September 18th at 6:30 PM at the Rockport Opera House. This presentation is part of the library’s series, "The World in Your Library" supported by the Maine Humanities Council.
China's one-child policy has been very controversial since its implementation in 1980 in terms of its impact on Chinese family structure, the tradition of parental old age care, the skewed sex ratio, women’s status, and government intrusion into family concerns. Dr. Hong Zhang will give an overview of why China’s one-child policy came into being, how it was resisted in rural China but accepted in urban China, and new developments in China’s birth control policy. She will cover the newly emerging social, economic, and demographic factors that have reshaped fertility trends, and the new challenges to China due to an aging population, skewed sex ratio, and labor shortage.
Dr. Hong Zhang obtained her Ph.D. in anthropology from Columbia University. She is currently Associate Professor of East Asian Studies at Colby College, where she teaches courses in Chinese language and culture. This presentation is free and open to everyone
